The Flywheel And Battery Energy Storage System Is Siemens Energy’s First Large-scale Hybrid Energy Project To Be Deployed in Ireland

According to foreign media reports, Siemens Energy plans to provide technology for a hybrid deployment energy project in Ireland, which combines a synchronous condenser and a 160MWh large battery energy storage system.

The company will provide technology for the synchronous condenser and large-scale battery energy storage system at Shannonbridge. The company claims this is the first hybrid energy project combining battery energy storage and synchronous condensers to be deployed in Ireland.

The project will deploy a synchronous condenser, which includes a flywheel capable of injecting 4,000MW of inertia into the grid, and a 160MWh large-scale battery energy storage system. Siemens Energy will also provide power conversion systems, energy management systems, and medium-voltage electrical equipment.

Construction on the project, which has an order value of €85 million ($90 million), has already begun, although Ireland's energy market and grid are generally considered to be one.

While Siemens Energy did not specify in a press release, industry media reported that the project appears to be the "Shannonbridge B" project being developed for Lumcloon Energy and Hanwha Energy, which started construction a year ago. construction.

Synchronous condensers can provide low-carbon inertial services, which can be combined with the battery energy storage system's ability to provide fast frequency response, and energy reserve services, allowing the project to respond to sudden changes in electricity supply and demand.

Tim Holt, member of the board of directors of Siemens Energy, said: “If we are to combat the consequences of climate change and transition to a net-zero grid, innovative technology solutions are crucial. Battery energy storage systems will play an increasingly important role in the global energy infrastructure of the future. The more critical role.

By combining our proven experience and innovation capabilities in grid technology, the Shannonbridge Hybrid Energy Project will help increase the utilization of renewable energy by providing battery energy storage systems and grid stabilization technology through grid connection.

Siemens Energy also did not specify whether the battery energy storage system will be provided by Fluence, a global battery energy storage system integrator established in a joint venture between Siemens and U.S. utility AES.

Fluence recently won an order for a four-hour battery energy storage system to be deployed in Ireland by Norwegian state-owned independent power producer Statkraft.

Earlier this year, Ireland was named one of the top five most attractive energy storage markets in Europe by Aurora Energy Research
