- 1. The world's largest lithium-ion battery energy storage system project is put into production
Vistra Energy announced in August 2023 that the third phase of its Moss Landing battery energy storage system project of 350MW/1400MWh has been put into use. At present, the total project scale has reached 750MW/3000MWh.
The project's first phase of 300MW/1200MWh and the second phase expansion of 100MW/400MWh were connected to the grid and commissioned in December 2020 and July 2021 respectively.
However, between September 2021 and June 2022, the first two projects were forced to go offline due to overheating events. Vistra Energy Corporation, the subject of the project, is also investigating.
There are also relatively large projects that have been put into production globally this year. In November, Grenergy, an energy developer headquartered in Spain, released an investment plan from 2023 to 2026, with a total investment of US$2.6 billion, including one of the world's largest projects planned to be deployed in Chile. In September, Infinity announced the launch of an 8.4MWh vanadium redox flow battery energy storage system in Canada, which is currently the world's largest non-lithium battery energy storage system.
Thermal energy storage technology developer Kyoto Group has opened and operated a 4MW/18MWh thermal energy storage project in Denmark using its Heatcube technology. The project uses electricity to heat molten salt to 415°C and then generates steam to store thermal energy. It is the world's largest thermal energy storage project.
- 2. US$1.8 billion! Plus Power completes the largest financing event in the energy storage field
In October, US energy storage system developer and operator Plus Power completed a US$1.8 billion financing plan for five energy storage projects planned to be deployed in Arizona and Texas.
Its financing includes project construction loans, term loans, and tax equity financing. The total scale of these five energy storage projects is 1.04GW/2.76GWh.
Funding also includes $707 million for the 250MW Sierra Estrella energy storage project in Arizona, west of Phoenix. The energy storage system is expected to be the largest independently deployed battery energy storage system in Arizona and is scheduled to be completed in 2029.
Currently, Plus Power operates lithium-ion battery energy storage businesses in more than 25 states in the United States and Canada and plans to deploy 10GW of battery energy storage systems and connect them to the grid.

Three battery suppliers and system integrators have announced offtake agreements this year, which is the largest in history.
In June this year, Powin Energy signed a 10GWh battery supply agreement with Chinese battery manufacturer Yiwei Lithium Energy Company. This is the second multi-year agreement Powin has signed with Yiwei Lithium Energy after signing a two-year "gigawatt-level" contract in 2021.
In September, French battery manufacturer Verkor and European energy storage system integrator Nidec signed a 10GWh battery supply agreement. Most of Verkor's production capacity will be acquired by the French automotive group Renault.
Two months later, FlexGen, a software-focused energy storage system integrator, and Haichen Energy Storage, a battery manufacturer specializing in battery energy storage systems, signed a 25GWh two-way battery supply and EMS agreement. Haichen Energy Storage The company will sell 10GWh batteries to FlexGen.
