How Can Data Center Operators Begin To Deploy Battery Energy Storage Systems As Backup Power Sources?

According to foreign media reports, Saft has deployed four battery energy storage units for Microsoft's data center in Sweden, and ABB has selected ZincFive as its technology supplier for UPS power solutions.

Saft, a unit of oil and gas giant Total Energy, will deploy a battery storage system for a Microsoft-run data center in Sweden that will be operational in June 2023, part of Microsoft's plan to bring its data centers to 2030. part of the plan to remove diesel power generation from the energy mix.

Saft provides four battery energy storage units, each with a capacity of 4MWh and a continuous discharge time of 1 hour and 20 minutes.
Cedric Duclos, CEO of Saft, said: "Saft spent 16 months deploying battery energy storage systems in the data center infrastructure operated by Microsoft, creating backup power systems to ensure a high level of power redundancy to focus on improving data efficiency. security and reliability at the center. In addition to replacing diesel generators, this battery energy storage system will support grid stability and provide black start capabilities to ensure the grid recovers quickly in the event of a blackout."

At this year's EU Energy Storage Summit in London, a senior Microsoft manager said the company hopes to deploy battery energy storage systems in data centers it operates around the world.

In related news about the deployment of battery energy storage systems in data centers, power and automation technology company ABB has listed nickel-zinc battery supplier ZincFive as an approved supplier of its uninterruptible power supply (UPS) solutions.
Oregon-based ZincFive has developed nickel-zinc battery technology that it claims has better power density and performance and is safer than lithium-ion batteries. This kind of battery is mainly used in scenarios that require mission-critical, uninterrupted, and high-quality power.

Although data centers have traditionally used UPS power as backup power, the announcement stated that the two companies are introducing energy storage systems into the data center.

ABB has now completed testing of ZincFive's BC series UPS battery cabinets, and its MegaFlex UPS power combination ensures full compatibility with UPS power supply systems.

ABB stated that there are currently several battery energy storage projects using ZincFive's solutions. The footprint, safety, high ambient temperature operation, and full life cycle sustainability of these projects are key factors in the technology selection process.
