  Data from the China Chemical and Physical Power Supply Industry Association shows that as of the end of 2022, China's cumulative installed capacity of new energy storage reached 11.5GW. In 2023, China's new energy storage market is expected to reach 15GW-20GW. CICC predicts that global energy storage demand is expected to reach 189GWh this year, a year-on-year increase of more than 60%.

 

 With the rapid development of the energy storage industry, the market has put forward higher requirements for the new generation of battery cells in terms of performance, cost and safety. In this regard, one of the mainstream solutions is to increase the battery capacity and iterate on the current mainstream of 280Ah. According to incomplete statistics from Battery China, more than 20 battery companies have already deployed research and development, or have released 300Ah+ large-capacity energy storage dedicated batteries.

 

 Nardon Power, Trina Energy Storage, Ganfeng Lithium Battery, Penghui Energy, Honeycomb Energy, etc. have all released batteries with a capacity of 300Ah+. Yiwei Lithium Energy and Vision Technology Co., Ltd. have developed ultra-large-capacity batteries of 560Ah and 580Ah respectively. Yiwei Lithium Energy's announcement shows that its 560Ah large battery cell has a cycle life of more than 12,000 times, which can reduce the cost of system integration applications by 10%, reduce parts by 47%, and increase production efficiency by 30%.

 

In addition, Battery China recently learned in its research that the large-capacity ultra-low-cost energy storage containers currently released by Chuneng New Energy use the company's latest generation 314Ah capacity energy storage cells, which can achieve a 20-size standard container with a larger capacity than 280Ah. From 3.35MWh to 5MWh, the cost dropped by 12%, and the land required for 100MWh was reduced by 32%.

 

 Tianyi Energy launched a new generation of energy storage 314Ah large-capacity battery cells with an energy density of up to 180Wh/kg and a cycle number of more than 10,000 times.

 

  Hunan Desai Battery has also laid out new generation lithium iron phosphate energy storage battery products such as 306Ah and 314Ah.

 

 In fact, various companies are competing to develop large-capacity batteries with the original intention of reducing costs. According to analysis by industry insiders, with the same investment in manpower and energy consumption, with a slight increase in raw materials, the unit ampere-hours of output will increase; in addition, while fixed costs such as depreciation of factory equipment remain unchanged, the unit cost of the product will decrease. , thus bringing strong price competitiveness.

 

It is worth noting that most battery cell players achieve battery cell capacity expansion by increasing the volumetric energy density of their products. While this reduces costs and accelerates market development, it also brings corresponding technical problems and safety hazards that need to be resolved to the industry. Some experts pointed out that as the capacity of battery cells increases, the risks associated with thermal management and overall efficiency are also increasing.
