What are the performance levels and power requirements of data center diesel generators?

In order to cover the different requirements of each power supply system, diesel generators have the following four performance levels.

  • Level G1: For connected loads whose basic voltage and frequency parameters only need to be specified. Such as general purpose (lighting and other simple electrical loads).
  • Class G2: For loads whose voltage characteristics are very similar to those of the public power system. When the load changes, there may be temporary but allowable voltage and frequency deviations. Such as lighting systems, pumps, fans, and winches.
  • Level G3: The equipment used for connection has strict requirements on the stability, frequency, voltage, and waveform characteristics of the generator set. Such as telecommunications loads and thyristor-controlled loads. The effect of the rectifier and thyristor-controlled loads on the generator voltage waveform may require special attention.
  • G4 level: used for loads that have particularly strict requirements on the stability, frequency, voltage, and waveform characteristics of the generator set. Such as data processing equipment or computer systems.

The power rating types of diesel generator sets are as follows:

  • Continuous Power (COP): Under agreed operating conditions and maintained following the maintenance intervals and methods specified by the manufacturer, the maximum power that the generator set can continuously supply to a constant load without restriction during the annual operating time.
  • Basic power (PRP): The maximum power that a generator set can produce continuously to supply variable loads without restriction during the annual operating hours under agreed operating conditions and when maintained in accordance with the maintenance intervals and methods specified by the manufacturer. Unless otherwise specified by the reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engine manufacturer, the allowable average power output within a 24-hour period should not be greater than 70% of the PRP.
  • Limited time operating power (LTP): Under agreed operating conditions and maintained in accordance with the maintenance intervals and methods specified by the manufacturer, the maximum power of the generator set can be supplied for 500 hours per year. The maximum operating time per year at 100% limited time operating power (LTP) shall not exceed 500h.
  • Emergency Standby Power (ESP): A certain variable power of the generator set operating up to 200h per year under agreed operating conditions and maintenance according to the maintenance intervals and methods specified by the manufacturer when the public grid fails or under test conditions. Maximum power in the series. The allowable average output power within a 24-hour operating cycle should not be less than 70% of the ESP, unless otherwise specified by the reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engine manufacturer.
  • Data Center Power (DCP): The maximum power that a generator set can provide to a variable or continuous electrical load under unlimited operating hours. Depending on the location of supply and the availability of reliable mains power, it is the generator set manufacturer's responsibility to determine what power levels he can provide to meet this requirement, including adjustments to hardware or software or maintenance schedules. Engine-driven alternator sets are reliable backup power sources for data centers. It should not be connected to the mains grid during continuous loading.

Maximum power (MAX) of small-power generator sets: Some electrical appliances require higher power when starting than the actual operating power. The maximum power allowed to meet this need. The maximum power of a small-power generator set is the power obtained by multiplying the output current and voltage of the generator set. At this power, the generator set can output for at least 5 minutes. The specified output voltage should be within ±10% of the rated voltage, and the specified output frequency should be within ±8% of the rated frequency. The minimum ratio between the power rating (COP) and the maximum power (MAX) should be greater than or equal to 0.75.

The data center's requirements for diesel generator performance grade power rating selection are as follows:

  • The performance level of the backup diesel generator set should not be lower than G3 level.
  • A-class data center diesel generator sets should operate continuously and without time limits. The output power of the diesel generator sets should meet the needs of the maximum average load of the data center and should be selected based on continuous power (COP) or data center power (DCP).
  • The output power of the Class B data center diesel generator set can be selected according to the limited time operating power (LTP) of 500h.
